The World Conservation Union (IUCN) is picking up speed on the road to Barcelona where the 4th IUCN World Conservation Congress will be held in 2008. IUCN Vice President Puri Canals today briefed the Union’s Council on plans for the Congress.
The World Conservation Union (IUCN) is picking up speed on the road to Barcelona where the 4th IUCN World Conservation Congress will be held in 2008. IUCN Vice President Puri Canals today briefed the Union’s Council on plans for the Congress.
The world’s largest and most diverse environmental event, the IUCN Congress will be held in Barcelona, from 5-14 October 2008. An expected 8,000 attendees will share, debate, negotiate and commit to putting diversity and sustainability at the heart of decision-making around the world.
The results, commitments and new partnerships arising from the Congress will form the ‘Barcelona Legacy’: a roadmap to a truly diverse and sustainable world. Councilors were called on to help reach out to IUCN members and partners, as well as people outside the traditional environmental community to contribute to the Congress and its legacy.
Substantial progress in planning the event, together with the two host governments of Spain and Catalonia, was reported. Communications, fundraising, logistics, exhibition areas and Congress programme plans are all well underway.
All IUCN member organizations, Commissions, partners, staff and other relevant bodies were invited to express an interest in organizing events at the Congress earlier this month. The first deadline for submissions is 31 July 2007. More information can be found at www.iucn.org/congress
Vice President Puri Canals will be taking Barcelona to the world and mobilizing IUCN members at a series of regional forums in the coming months.
