Observers allowed to attend contact groups at the IUCN World Conservation Congress

30 July 2008 | News story

IUCN is pleased to announce that the Congress Preparatory Committee decided to allow observers to attend meetings of contact groups during the Members' Assembly of the IUCN World Conservation Congress. The Congress will take place from 5 to 14 October, 2008, in Barcelona, Spain.

During the Members' Assembly,  this unique global environmental parliament of governments and NGOs  will discuss and adopt nore than 100 motions. These are the mechanisms by which member organizations guide IUCN’s policy and Programme of work as well as influencing many other organizations around the world.

Only IUCN members are allowed to vote on these important decisions. However, participants from Commissions, private sector and other sectors can attend the Members' Assembly as observers.

Some of the motions will be discussed in so-called contact groups before going to Plenary. The Congress Preparatory Committee has decided to allow observers to attend these groups in order to benefit from the interesting discussions.

The motions that have been submitted for Congress will be published on this website on 6 August 2008.
