530 proposals received in the first round of submissions to the World Conservation Congress

Three months ago, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) invited its member organizations, Commission members and partners to submit proposals for events at the World Conservation Congress. More than 650 people from 511 different organizations have followed this request so far and signed up to the Forum system.
In the first round of submissions which ended on 31 July 2007, IUCN received 530 proposals: 251 Aliances workshops, 48 movies, 60 posters, 28 social events, 40 knowledge café discussions and 62 Learning opportunities.
All these events will contribute to the overall theme of the Congress "A diverse and sustainable world" by sharing know-how, reaching agreements and moving to actions under one of the the following 3 thematic streams:
A new climate for change
Healthy Ecosystems - healthy people
Safeguarding the diversity of life.
Proposals will be evaluated during the month of August. The second and last deadline to submit proposals for an event at the World Conservation Congress will be the 30 September 2007.
The World Conservation Congress will take place from 5 to 14 October 2008 in Barcelona and will be jointly hosted by the Spanish and Catalan government.
