The Forest Journey, led by the IUCN Forest Conservation Programme, its members and partners, focuses on how best to conserve biodiversity in landscapes that also need to produce and sustain local livelihoods. Through the informative events presented on the journey, various approaches that make landscapes work for nature and people are illustrated.
Central to all these approaches is the need to ensure that the voices of the poor and disenfranchised are heard and strengthened, as best-case scenarios can only be successfully implemented if all stakeholders are included in decision making processes and the need for trade-offs between interests is made explicit.
Throughout the entire forest journey, IUCN’s attention to key local and global forest priorities is emphasized, as are the range of tools used within forest landscapes to create sustainable and equitable forest management. Other topics to be explored include:
- How do we manage forest landscapes to enhance the food security of the rural poor?
- How do we help local communities adapt to climate change within forest landscapes?
- How the value of forests in sequestering and storing carbon might be made to work for local communities
- The positive role markets can play in meeting local needs whilst sustaining biodiversity
We hope that the forest journey provides new ideas and new ways of looking at old ideas that can be taken back to the landscapes in which the IUCN membership works. We look forward to travelling with you on the Forest Journey and meeting you at the Forest Pavilion.
